I just moved to the bay area about a week ago. I am a beginner silk dancer. I have my own rig in my backyard that I am able to train on daily but I am looking for some training ideas that I can do off the silk. What do all of you do to stay in shape? I have been practicing for about 5 months, I am real solid in the basic tricks but struggle immensely with straddle ups. Have straddle ups been challenging for anyone else? How did you get over the learning hump? Hope to get to know and play with some of you in the future!

If interested, please contact me a.s.a.p. We are having a fundraiser for Day of the Dead to benefit the following event:

SAN FRANCISCO COLLABORATIVE BI-CULTURAL ARTISTIC FUSION BOMB- CALL FOR ARTISTS

2010 ART HAPPENINGS

Request for Aerialist/Performance Artist

Deadline: Nov. 5th

Project Benefits: Resume piece. Photographs of your work. Promotion and exposure to new audiences and movement artists. To be a part of inspiring collaborative work.

Eligibility: Open to artists living in the Bay Area

Description:

This is an invitation to enter and exciting collaboration with performance artists experienced in belly dance, butoh, and aerial dance within the San Francisco area for projected local events and in Los Angeles (for benefit events benefiting an Ethiopian village in Africa).

We will have an installation sculpture piece that will suspend from the ceiling and be climbed upon by one to three aerialists. The sculpture will be an animal skeleton design.
We will have a production team to help work out the rigging and tech logistics. We encourage collaboration of resources, networks, and contacts as a group, we desire more exposure and events.
We prefer artists working in aerial, modern dance, butoh, and the likes. A deer skeleton with antlers is our aim for this particular project. The theme will be fusion, and the structure will be structurally sound for aerial climbing. We like the effect of a skeleton with antlers.

The choreographers are Jill Parker & Monikah Barriga. We are loosely working with the theme Fusion for now and that may evolve and change as we go (tribal fusion belly dance, butoh philosophy as it relates to audience and environment, and aerial movement with theatrics). Jill has 22 years of experience as an international bellydance teacher, choreographer, director of Ultra Gypsy and the Foxglove Sweethearts. Monikah has eight years of experience in butoh and a fusion of aerial arts for venues such as Symbiosi, LACMA, Coachella Arts Festival, INBA Museo, Solids sculpture events, Electric Daisy Carnival.

This will be an excellent opportunity to learn how to work with other artists in a collaborative environment for venues we are targeting such as Yerba Buena Center or the Arts, Supper Club, Ethiopian Benefit Events hosted by Marco Guzzardo.

Application Information:

All application materials must be submitted on-line to contacts listed below. There is no
application fee.

The color doesn't really matter, as I'm only in the beginner stage and I'm not looking to perform any time soon.
Online stores seem to average at about $12 per yard, but there's got to be something cheaper than that! I'm also ok with buying used ones... as long as their still in good condition.
Anyway, I wanted to invite anyone who is interested to come play on Tuesday nights and teach me a few things on the silks... There are lots of other fun things you can learn while you're there too!

Hello,

I would like to start an aerial jam/lab/skillshare in the Bay Area, one in which aerialists with at least a little bit of skills can get together to share tricks and research new material--perhaps even critique each other's work. I am especially interested in exploring ways that aerials can merge with Contact Improvisation--or how styles like Butoh can be taken into the air. I've done a little of this work (mostly Silks or Trapeze meets Contact Improv or Butoh); it's extremely exciting and holds deep potential.

Ideally, I'd like to have weekly sessions, perhaps in the East Bay, perhaps San Francisco (I'm located in Oakland). We'd all pitch in a little bit to share the cost of the studio.

So I am trying to find out:

-Who is interested
-Where you see this happening (I was thinking, for the city, of DanceGround Keriac, or a warehouse in West Oakland such as the Vulcan--but please hit me with ideas! On sunny days, we might even try it in a park, what do you think?)
-What aerial equipment you might be willing to contribute to the jam/lab (I have a set of silks)
-What you'd like to play on, and specific areas of interest (lab? critique? skillshare?)
-When you'd be available to get together

In gratitude,

Hello, aerialists. I've been taking pictures of aerial acts for a couple years now, and I'd like to spend less time at the mercy of performance lighting and create better photos in a controlled setting. The trick is finding a place to do it, ideally in SF. Any recommendations? Rigging points and some floorspace are critical, and a nice clean background (or large room) would be very helpful. I've got my own strobes, so I don't need any on-site lighting. I have a couple leads, but thought you folks might have some good ideas.

On a related note, performers interested in photos should get in touch with me. :)

January 31st, 2009, Santa Cruz, CA~ Born from the saloon vaudeville that toured the Wild West in the late 1800's and slammed into the underworld of modern American road culture. The Yard Dogs create a timeless space for the union of ancient theatrical alchemy and modern pop culture. Coming to the Rio Theatre on January 31st, The Yard Dogs Road Show is a hobo cabaret, a living patchwork of vaudeville and rock and roll. In the enchanting land of stage show entertainment theirs is both pleasant and formidable terrain. They require a sensitivity to the subtle and the absurd. They lead the modern hobohemian on a visual and sonic journey through part of history that may or may not have existed – followed by an ambitious return to the emotional challenges of our punch-drunk contemporary world. It’s a true story on stage: sword swallowers, dancing dolls, fire eaters and sunset hobo poetry - all animated by the live sounds of the Yard Dogs cartoon heavy band. Yard Dogs Road Show is pure visual and sonic voodoo.

We offer hooping, acro, conditioning, juggling, yoga and clown lab. For fifteen dollars a month (yes, I said fifteen dollars) members can train and teach in the space. Next month the collective is putting on a showcase which includes acro-balance, aerial, juggling and more. Aurora Aerial is also based out of the space and will be holding auditions for an autumn run of shows on September 1st. There is a new aerial yoga class at Swan River Yoga Shala uptown as well.
I'm just begining to learn Tissu in Seattle in an incredible maternal environment. Basically its just an open workshop (free) where i can practice what i know and watch others or ask them questions as they arrise. I am moving to Berkeley in June to finish my BFA and I'm hoping to find a studio of some sort to practice aerials in. I am new at it but I am very self motivated and trained on safety. Do you know anywhere in the bay area that I could practice like this (with others for free)?

Thanks guys!

We would be pretty adaptable but the place would need a semi-legit stage (not just a foot and a half thing in the corner of a bar).

Havik Circus is a new circus that was created two years ago, in Richmond, Virginia, USA. We have just signed a contract with Wyndham Hotels to begin install circus troupes in their Caribbean destination resorts.

We are putting together professional circus troupes to perform in circus shows during the week (2 to 3 performances per week) and help provide circus activities during the day for the guests of the hotel. Four hours of the day are for circus activities with the guests while four hours are available for individual training in the performer's discipline or the flying trapeze.

Havik Circus has trainers that were developed under Bob Christians, a former instructor and performer from Barnum and Bailey's Circus. They will be able to train individuals in the art of flying trapeze and the most talented will have the opportunity to perform in the flying trapeze shows.

Performers don't have to be out at night, perform in non-circus shows or do any non circus related activities. We are dedicated to creating a safe, professional, and fun atmosphere to learn, develop, and perform circus skills.

All Havik Circus locations are at tropical Wyndham resorts in the Caribbean. Individuals or even whole troupes may be installed together at the resorts and will have opportunities to travel and perform at the different locations.

We are not only looking for performers, but for people interested in helping create shows and even manage their own circus troupe. Havik Circus can provide an open canvas for individuals to create or give direction in some of our shows that have already been developed. Our range and versatility will reflect those of the performers we hire.

Performers will receive all expenses including:

* Travel
* Room
* Meals
* Healthcare

In addition, they will receive $650 USD/month during their initial training period.

This training period will last from 1 to 6 months depending on the skills of the individuals. After initial training salaries will range from $750 USD/month to $1000 USD/month depending on abilities and experience of the performer.

Also, Havik Circus will look to promote from within for those who qualify to manage our troupes at these resorts.
What creative ideas have you used to spice up your aerial costumes?

I don't have any skills to speak of, but I do have space. I rent space in a large West Oakland warehouse. It's not the cleanest place, and it's sometimes noisy, but the ceilings are high and there are lots of things to rig to. I don't have the fabric or a mat, but I can't imagine that those things would be difficult to come by.

Hello everyone,

Having done fabric for several years, I find myself with too much equipment now that I'm switching to more ground-based skills. I have two professional aerial fabrics/silks/tissus for sale.

1.) Extra-stretchy, black matte fabric. Super wide (54"). Stretches horizontally, not vertically. Awesome for building strength, and for learning drops (nice and cushy). Also great for hammock applications. Length= 39 feet total (13 yards). So when doubled and hung from a rescue 8, you're looking at a hanging height of about 20 feet or lower. Bought for $13/yard. Selling for $50, not including any hardware and not including shipping. Slightly used but totally clean, absolutely perfect condition.

2.) Medium-stretch, gorgeous deep purple matte fabric. Super wide (54"). Stretches horizontally, not vertically. Easier to climb but still nice and cushy for big drops. I got this one for traditional circus-tent height so it's long (Length= 57 feet total or 19 yards). Hang height= about 29 feet or lower. Selling for $6/yard plus rescue 8, for a total of $150 plus shipping. This one is totally BRAND NEW-- my circus contract unfortunately fell through at the last minute.

I am in Portland, Oregon. Please contact me if you are interested and pass on this post to your friends! I have pictures of both fabrics that I can email. Thank you!!

I'm new to the world of aerial arts and am wondering if the different disciplines (static trapeze, flying trapeze, aerial tissu) have different personalities, or attract different "types" of people.

I have some dance background and find that I'm drawn to different dance forms for their different flavors and demands. Are the aerial arts the same? Are they different in terms of flavor, and physical requirement?

It seems that flying trapeze is the only discipline that offers "drop in" classes, so I took a single flying trapeze class at Circus Center. It was ok, but I'm wondering what the other kinds of aerial classes are like, and whether my tastes/personality would be suited for one more than another.

Or maybe it depends more on age, body-type, background? I'm 5'9" -- is that too tall? The women I've seen do this seem much smaller.

Anyway, I'm curious about the aerial arts and wondering if and how I can try it a bit more.

Thanks in advance for your input!
So glad to find this tribe at long last. I have been working with the tissu for 2 years now, and am beginning to branch out of the Hum-bubble to connect with other aerialistas and events. Fabulous to find this group.

Any input on where to look would be most welcome. I can find the hardware and rigging locally, so if folks know where to point me for fabric and/or fabric plus rigging that would be oh-so-very-helpful.

I haven't done aerial work in almost a year, my body feels like a sack of potate, and I am looking for a supportive space to start training again. Ideally, I'm looking for a space where I can get back in shape and put together a new fabric piece. I've trained both with aerial dancers and with circus acrobats, and my pieces tend to incorporate a little bit of both (on a good day! heh). My ideal training environment has enough people around to encourage safety without having so many people that I start to feel self-conscious while I am trying to be creative.

I trained at the Circus Center six years ago, and I found it was a good environment to work out, but not a good space to be creative. I'd love to hear people's more recent experiences, and plug in with the aerial community a bit again.
Splash Circus is seriously expanding its adult classes in the East Bay, including: aerial arts, hand balancing, acrobatics, partner balance, etc. I've been attending aerial classes here for the past two years and it's a great school with excellent teachers. The schedule online isn't quite right because there's another Adult Aerial Arts class on Sunday night from 7:30 to 9, and the Hand Balancing class is from 5:30 to 6:30, so you should call to make sure what's going on there. Also, you get discounts for signing up for the entire session. If you have any questions, I'm happy to answer them!

I have someone who is going to build us one should we need it but first I have to figure out if its feasible, i.e: its not going to be a waste of money. You may have visited our camp last year at 2.00 @ Esplanade, it was lots of fun with lots of partiers each night.....I'd love to bring the performances to a new level, which is where you guys come in.....HOPEFULLY! Sometimes I like to dream big ;o)

Avis aux intéressés...

Bonjour,
